The Checklist Manifesto

The medical world is still facing problems with preventable errors causing undue suffering and death. A potential solution is the use of checklists. In addition to showing successes in implementing checklists, this book demonstrates the difficulty in implementing simple checklists and the culture changes that need to take place in the healthcare arena. It is a great read.

BMETs use checklists everyday and therfore we can offer some expertise to the clinical staff. This is another opportunity to market your skills and understanding of complex problems and troubleshooting.

Introduction and questions

Hello, I have a feeling I will be hanging around here more. I have signed up for a 2 year AAS degree at a technical college this summer of 2010. I chose to pursue this career because of the future opportunities it has in store, and looks like I can do a good job at it. And, they said Health care is a booming field, so with these economic times I think I am making a smart decision with pursuing this degree.

I'm also doing their Medical Imaging systems class for double major there, I don't see why not, it won't take more time, even though I have no idea how it will benefit me.

Once I am out of school in 2 years, I want to move to Europe (before or after loans are paid?), and I can't seem to find any information on the BMET job opportunities in other countries. Does anyone know anything about this?

Also, someone recommended doing something in electronics field, because it will help me find an entry level job?

But I am really excited, and ready to get my life starting up. Thanks for your time. Talk to you soon,

Ryan

RE: A Practicum for Biomedical Engineering and Technology Management Issues

Hi Steve,

This is a great site amigo!!!

I have had the pleasure of meeting the author Les. Les is an awesome guy and I read his book...I highly recommend it to all BMETs who are studying for CBET. In fact, its great of CE managers who want to learn more about our career.

two thumbs up here!

lastly, another great read "Clinical Engineering Handbook" by another awesome guy Joseph F Dyro. This is the BMET/CE original bible and I recommend it too.

take care and ttyl,

Chris

RE: Certification

I think they should! For professional pride above all. There are a ton of certifications a BMET can pursue. In no particular order CBET, CRES, CLES, CCE (Certified Clinical Engineer), A+, Net+...ton of IT certifications. In addition, I also feels it's a good idea to stay actively involved. There a a lot of professional membership society's out there. Just to name a few:
?Association of the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation(AAMI)
?Radiological Society of North America(RSNA)
?Association of Military Surgeons of the United States(AMSUS)
?American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE)
?Biomedical Engineering Society(BMES)
?Emergency of Care Research Institute(ECRI)

RE: Medical Technology for the IT Professional

This is a very informative guide and we have recommended it to all our IT folks that are dealing with medical device security to get them up to speed. My biggest complaint is that it really needs to be the other way around "IT Technology for Biomedical Equipment Technicians". The paradigms are so different and with our fundamental understanding of healthcare and healthcare technology, grasping networking and other IT-centric information is far easier. Eventually we will be working together with the IT community and it is important to understand their point of view and their language.

Medical Technology for the IT Professional

Produced by ECRI Institute, his new guide covers medical technologies that are heavily IT-based or highly integrated into IT infrastructures. Each chapter examines a specific medical technology?what it is and how it works?then dives deeper into the issues affecting IT. Illustrations and clear-cut language help you fully understand:

- Components and functions behind technologies like infusion pumps and RFID

- How to address interfacing, software applications, installation and data integration issues

- Factors impacting acquisition, implementation, patient safety and ongoing support of medical technology

You've given me a lot to think about here. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

I'll be back once I've ruminated on this for a while.

Thanks. Hopefully the word will get out and this will be used. There actually is a favicon, but IE and Chrome don't show it. Safari and Firefox do.

RE: Continuing education

Personally, I think the traditional BMET path needs to change and include IT training as part of the curriculum. Sacrificing the healthcare-centric nature of the BMET in favor of IT is a mistake. BMETs have a very different paradigm than traditional IT staff members when it comes to patient safety and and patient care. I would argue that even though you don't actively remember the material for your CBET or your initial training, passively it is there and you probably use it more often than you think.

I was also looking at the GE training and if it lives up to the billing it would be great. I am currently in a staff position, but we all went to get A+,Net+,Security+ certified. It was a quick solution to a problem, but does not teach you all that you need to know and certainly does not bring the medical piece into the equation at all.

I think the value of the BMET/CE of the future is fully understanding the Clinical Infrastructure of a medical facility. This includes the equipment, environment of care, and the information systems piece. In most cases we are well versed in two of the three already.
